B.A. courses

All B.A. degree programmes are four years, and all History (but not Archaeology) courses at present two semesters (one academic year). The Department of History offers the following B.A. degree programmes:

(a) Single Major in History OR in Archaeology Option;

(b) Double Major in History;

(c) Minor in History.

 

Single Majors are taken with a Minor subject. Double Majors to are taken with another Major subject within the Faculty of Humanities (including Sociology and Environmental Science).

Archaeology Option Single Major students are recommended to take Sociology and Environmental Science courses.

 

Departmental Regulations

 

These regulations should be read in conjunction with both Faculty and General Regulations.

History or Archaeology are offered as a Major Subject, or as a Minor Subject, as defined in Faculty Special Regulations 22:36 and 22:37.

Students taking History as Major Subject must take H201, H301, and H401.

Subject to Special Regulation 20:49.1, a student may be allowed, in exceptional circumstances, to take a course from another Department as part of the History Subject, but only in Years 3 and 4.

Not all courses listed may be offered in any one year.

CERTIFICATE IN MUSEUM STUDIES

The Certificate is designed for museum assistant and technical assistant grades, but is open to other candidates with a Cambridge School Certificate or equivalent. Previous working experience in a museum or equivalent institution will be an advantage.

There are four compulsory courses, plus laboratory work and a short project. Students may also be required to pass E131 Communication Skills in English.

MS14: Introduction to African Cultural Environments

M.A. DEGREE IN HISTORY

 

The M.A. degree is normally a two-year programme. Four papers of course work must be passed, followed by the writing of a thesis. (See General Regulations for M.A.)

M.A. students must take:

H 601: Research Methodology and Philosophy of History

H602: Historiography of Southern Africa

followed by TWO of the following:

M.Phil./ Ph.D in History & Archaeology

The M.Phil./ Ph.D. programme is governed by the University's General Regulations and the History Department's Special Regulations. Students enrol initially for the M.Phil., and are later transferred to the Ph.D. programme, assuming their research is progressing as it should. In the History Department, students will be admitted following assessment by the Department, and must present at least three seminar papers during the course of their study. Students may also be assigned appropriate coursework. See the PhD page.
