The first assignment is an essay assignment, due immediately after the mid-semester break (to be handed in in class, please do not leave assignments at my office or elsewhere). Length limit 1200 words. Essays do not need to be typed, but if hand-written must be easily legible.
Any references must be by footnotes, not author-date reference, and according to the style specified. See the guide to essay-writing and other guides on this web-site, and notes given in class.| Question | |

| 1. Why did the financial crisis of the Ancien Régime lead to the complete transformation of the 1789-91 revolution? Do NOT give a narrative of the events, but explain why these events took place. | |

| 2. Compare (i) revolutionary France, (ii) Napoleonic France, and (iii) the France of the restored Bourbons, to show how the changes of the revolution developed. What was reversed, and what was not? |
